A man accidentally drives to the Apple Headquarters, so he attempts to leave. He drives faster and faster looking for an exit, but he could not find it! Finally, he gives up and breaks. That’s when he found the exit.

jitouch finally makes Spaces usable

Lately, I’ve had upwards of 15 TextMate windows open and I’ve been itching for a solution so that I don’t have to spend the 3-6 seconds looking for the correct window I want to open.

Spaces is an awesome tool built into Mac OS X to organize windows, but the problem I’ve always had was the lack of available intuitive keyboard hotkeys to activate Spaces. By default, Spaces uses ^ Arrow Keys to switch between spaces (^ means “control”). My problem with this is that I use ⌘ and ^ combined with Arrow Keys very frequently to navigate through text (which is a greater productivity booster than Spaces).

Then it dawned on me! What if I could swipe four fingers to the left and right (which by default allows me to do the equivalent of ⌘ Tab, a feature I never use thanks to Exposé)? A friend of mine (Brian Yan) had been suggesting that I use jitouch for a while now, and so I tried it and you can guess the end of this story.

The jitouch preference pane

So now, I can swipe four fingers up to reveal the desktop (default), four fingers down for Exposé (default), four fingers left to switch to the left Space (jitouch), and four fingers right to switch to the right Space (jitouch). With this configuration, I only have Spaces in a row, which is fine for me. (In fact, even two spaces is enough for me for now.)

Identifier Resolution, Execution Contexts and scope chains

This is the article that I read about two years ago (during a very boring conference presentation) that allowed me to understand everything that happens in JavaScript. I recommend all web developers give it a thorough read.
